Tonight, the local pastor, Abimiel (Ah-bem-eye-el), spent some time with us. Brian interviewed him—or at least, he tried to.
Abimiel is passionate about his work, and let’s just say he’s not one for short answers. Brian asked him one question, and that was all he got in. The rest of the time, Abimiel shared stories about the villages, the people, and the impact of mission teams like ours.
He shared something really powerful. He told us that because of groups like ours, he’s able to teach in these villages. The medical, dental, and kids’ activities open doors, making it possible for him to come in and share the truth of Jesus’s love. He described it as a partnership—we lay stepping stones for him, and he does the same for us.
Before we ever step foot in a village, he visits at least twice to make sure it’s safe for us to work there. Then, after mission teams come in and serve, he’s able to continue teaching and discipling the people.
I’ve listened to him a few times now—he’s not forceful, but he doesn’t shy away from speaking the truth, even when it challenges what people have been taught. Right now, he regularly visits about 30 villages.
So while Brian didn’t get to ask his follow-up questions, we all walked away with a deeper appreciation for the work Abimiel is doing.
