MY DAY IN THE AMAZON VILLAGE
• Morning Devotion – Started the day reflecting on the Great Commission.
Kids’ Program (VBS Style)
• Led songs in English, teaching the kids the motions.
• Did a skit in both English and Portuguese.
• The kids cracked up when we “woke up” Jesus from sleeping in the boat during the storm. Then they took a turn acting it out—our little Jesus was hilarious.
• Made crafts, and the kids were so proud of their work. I’m not sure they get many chances to color.
• Ended with a big soccer game—ages 10 to 18, all playing together. Learned how to yell “cross, cross” while running up the side. Believe it or not, I did not score.
Lunch Break & Fishing
• Ate quickly, then went fishing in the Amazon with some of the crew and friends.
• No piranhas… actually, no fish at all.
• Got rained on, which was refreshing.
Men’s Group
• Met with a Brazilian pastor and local men. They had lots of questions about what we thought of the Amazon and their village.
• Their spot overlooked the river—beautiful view.
• Gave them hats, sunglasses, fishing line, and hooks. They were pumped—normally, they fish with homemade spears.
Afternoon Worship & Food Packs
• Worship in both English and Portuguese.
• Passed out food packs—each one provides food for 30 days.
• Back on the boat by 5:00 PM.
QUESTIONS YOU PROBABLY HAVE:
What was the village like?
• Houses were mostly small shacks surrounding a community building and, of course, a big sand soccer field.
• Chickens and dogs everywhere, but they weren’t a nuisance—just part of daily life.
Was there electricity?
• Yes, they got electricity a few years ago. There were three lights over the soccer field.
Cell service?
• Nope. Didn’t even take my phone.
WHAT DID OTHERS DO:
• Teenagers – Played volleyball.
• Women – Similar to the men’s group but focused on cooking supplies.
• Medical Team – Handed out ibuprofen, Tylenol, and children’s meds.
• Dental Team – Lots of cleanings and pulled a few abscessed teeth.
Incredible day.
